The literacy rate in any country is defined as the number of individuals of a society being educated to a certain level. Education is one of the greatest pillars that help to hold the basic foundations of any nation.

Education is not only responsible for creating awareness among the individuals, but it serves as a way of promoting the skills and grooming the potential of each member of the society.

Nations seeking higher levels and standards of education are marked by success in every field of the sphere. A strong educational system promotes the use of knowledge for the benefit of mankind. Education these days has become broader than its origin.

TOP TEN COUNTRIES WITH HIGHEST LITERACY RATES IN THE WORLD

Following are the top ten nations in the world with the highest literacy rates. The literacy rate is defined as the number of people in the country that are categorized as literate and educated.

10. ESTONIA

Estonia stands tenth on the global literacy rate. It has 99.8% of its population educated. Estonia has a highly efficient educational system with active educational institutes.

Local governments are made responsible to run schools on subsidies providing good quality educational studies in most parts of the country. Dividing the authority to the grass-root level created greater supervision over the educational institutes working in the state.

9. CUBA

As backward as it seems, Cuba is not lagging behind in the educational sector. The latest figures revealed that Cuba made it to the top ten countries of the world with the highest literacy rates.

It has also maintained its literacy level at 99.8%. Cuba spends 10 percent of its total revenue from the educational sector. Cuba’s educational policies are completely based on Marx’s ideology, providing education to each segment of the society.

8. LATVIA

Education is made compulsory for all up to the age of 15 in Latvia. The standards of primary, secondary, and tertiary education are quite satisfactory. It is the reason that many of the students from Ukraine, Russia, and Lithuania seek Latvia for obtaining tertiary education.

Some schools and universities are currently working in the country in which thousands of students are being enrolled each year.

7. AZERBAIJAN

Revolution in the educational system in Azerbaijan dates back to the Soviet era. Multiple schools and universities were established since then.

Currently, there are 36 state-run universities in the country and 15 private universities working in the country. It has raised the literacy level to an estimate of 99.8% according to the latest estimates.

6. NORWAY

This European country is blessed with great beauty and a well-established, self-sustaining education system. As lower and higher education is provided free of cost therefore not only native Norwegians seek education at all levels but people from different parts of the world also travel to Norway to seek higher education in any field.

5. LUXEMBOURG

The key element of the educational system of Luxembourg is that it has Tri-bilingualism, providing education in three different languages: English, German and French. Therefore, it covers the wider part of the society to create awareness and spread literacy among the individuals.

Besides other European countries, Luxembourg has also achieved the highest rate of literacy in the country. Part of the GDP spent on education is a little less than the other, but the percentage is as close as to 100% of the literacy rate in the country.

4. LIECHTENSTEIN

The current education system working in the country is the outcome of education policies implemented in 1971. Ever since the government maintained and strengthened the educational institutions of the country.

The literacy rate in the country is as high as 100 percent. In 2004, new amendments were made in the educational policy, bypassing a decree to add more educational institutions to support a pupil with psychological impairments.

3. GREENLAND

The political system of Greenland reveals that it has high concerns for education and literacy rates in the country. Therefore, much of the GDP of the country is spent on educational institutions. There is much more emphasis on vocational education.

Since the early 80s, the system for vocational education was set up to increase the output of practical professionals. With its current population, the latest census reveals that Greenland has a 100% of literacy rate.

2. FINLAND

Next to Andorra, comes Finland, which spends 7% of its GDP on the educational sector. The saying “education is the backbone of each society” holds a special significance in Finland. The government took many of the initiatives to spread the light of education to every corner of the country.

1. ANDORRA

Andorra has a nation that is virtually 100% literate. The government of Andorra has played a major role in achieving that objective by implementing such laws and rules that made education a compulsion for all. Children between the ages of 6 and 16 are made to attend school.

The country strived to provide free education up to a secondary level to all. It also spent a huge amount of its GDP on the educational sector and consequentially this has raised its level of literacy to the highest percentage.
